Musical monday #109

Well Baltiblogs is down, so I'm posting here, at least temporarily.

Welcome to Musical Monday #109. You know the drill: Every week, Elie alternate hosing ... players are invited to guess the songs, figure out the them but no "Googling." This week the theme is what the songs in each group have to do with the first one in the group. Later today check out Musical Monday #108 for results from last week!

Actually I'll allow Googling for one thing here. This is a variation on an earlier Musical Monday. So once you figure out the theme, if you want to find the earlier one for extra credit, you may search for that. (Hint: it's more than two years old.)

So with no further ado, here's Musical Monday #109. (I hope to update this tonight, so hold off on the bonuses until Thursday.)

16 - 20 are mentioned in rock and roll heaven

"that'll be the day" is mentioned in american pie

33 is mentioned in summer rain by johnny rivers

I was wrong about #11. Nightshift was not sung by Marvin Gaye. Not sure who sang it.

Yitzchak Goodman said...

3. is called "Running Down a Dream" or something like that.

Yitzchak Goodman said...

Other songs and artists were mentioned in American Pie as well:

"The Sargeants played a marching tune" refers to the Beatles

"the Jester on the sidelines in a cast" is Dylan after a motorcycle accident.

One line goes "Jack Flash sat on a Rolling Stone"

I think there's a line that goes
"Eight miles high and falling fast"

And "the music died" because of the plane crash that killed Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, and the Big Bopper

Maybe 8 is Chantilly Lace?

3) Running Down a Dream, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
16) Piece of My Heart, Janis Joplin

20) Mack the Knife
33) Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, The Beatles
36) Me and Bobby McGee, Janis Joplin

So is 29 American Pie? I thought it was "rhythm and blues." "Man, I dig those" is the first part of that line.

trn said...

Benjie, is 14,then, the Rock and Roll Heaven song?

Soccer Dad said...

TRN, Yikes, I should have learned by now not to go by memory. Yes, the proper lyrics were "Man, I dig those rhythm and blues." I always heard that phrase wrong. Thanks for the correction.

And you're correct about 14.

trn said...

Thanks for the confirmation, Soccer Dad!

When I think of all the lyrics I've mentioned in comments that I misremembered or always thought were slightly different . . .

Is there actually an authoritative version of the American Pie lyrics? It's such a complicated song.

I can't take credit for 14, as I was only putting together the information your brother provided.

trn said...

For the record, then:

14) Rock and Roll Heaven
29) American Pie, Don McLean

trn said...

So the first song of each group contains at least some sort of reference to the subsequent songs in each group?

Yitzchak Goodman said...

Oops! I mangled one line from American Pie. That should be "Jack Flash sat on a candle stick." There is a line about a "rolling stone" though, too, isn't there? It follows a line that goes "For ten years we've been on our own," I think.

If TRN is right, then 8 is the Jackie Wilson song mentioned in 7.
It was called "Reet petite"?

trn said...

Yes, Yitzchak, the line is something about moss growing fast on a rolling stone. Your supplying of the previous line caused me to be able to recall it.

I posted these earlier on Soccer Dad's Baltiblogs site, but I'll repeat them here.

22 - Folsom Prison Blues - Johnny Cash
Could 21-28 be songs by artists in the Sun Records "Million Dollar Quartet"?

41 - Don't Rock the Jukebox - ?
42 - Paint It Black - The Rolling Stones
43 is probably by George Jones.

44 - The Seeker - The Who
46 - A Day in the Life - The Beatles
44-46: The Seeker has the line, "I asked Bobby Dylan, I asked the Beatles"

48 - Are You Lonesome Tonight? - Elvis Presley
49 - Drive My Car - The Beatles

53 - Mr. Tambourine Man - The Byrds
Roger McGuinn is the connection to Creeque Alley. 52 might be a Lovin' Spoonful song?

59 - Garden Party - Ricky Nelson
61 - Crackerbox Palace - George Harrison
I believe Garden Party is about a concert at Madison Square Garden that Ricky Nelson played, with several other artists who are referenced in the song. George Harrison must have been one of them though I don't remember all the lyrics now (I do remember that "Yoko brought a walrus", but I thought "the walrus was Paul"... :)

62 - Empty Garden (Hey Hey Johnny) - Elton John
This song is about John Lennon.

LEL said...

46.A Day in the Life-The Beatles

Clayton said...

64 - Shooting Star - Bad Company
"Johnny was a schoolboy when he heard his first Beatles song", so 65 is likely by The Beatles.

Clayton said...

Sheesh. The answer was right there in the next line of the song...

65 - Love Me Do - The Beatles
