No More Mister Nice Blog and the War on Murdoch-ism

Posted: 05 May 2010 11:56 AM PDT

Leftist blogger No More Mister Nice Blog has a current offering entitled "Oh, Now It's OK To Blame Terrorism on U.S. Actions?" What provoked him? A New York Post article stating that the Times Square bomber claimed to be retaliating for drone attacks against the Taliban in Pakistan. According to the Post:Admitted terrorist Faisal Shahzad ... said he was driven to evil by the slew of deaths among leaders of the terror group, law-enforcement sources revealed yesterday....Quoth NMMNB:Wait -- "driven to evil" by American deeds? Hasn't it always been an ironclad rule in Murdoch Land that nothing we do can...

Everything you always wanted to know about sachs but were afraid to ask

Charles Krauthammer's son, Daniel, has embarked on a pundity career with The Senate and Goldman Sachs (h/t Peter Wehner). I'm not going to pretend to understand the whole thing, but this is about as comprehensive and understandable explanation of the investment created by Goldman Sachs and the investigation into whether Goldman Sachs committed fraud. There is a basic and very important difference between what financial institutions do and what every other sector of the economy does. Unlike firms in the rest of the economy, financial institutions do not produce actual, tangible goods. They operate on a level once removed from...

The post and proximity talks

Posted: 05 May 2010 04:15 AM PDT

The Washington Post has a pretty good editorial on the upcoming proximity talks between Israel and the Palestinian Authority, Israelis and Palestinians are ready to begin talking -- sort of: INDIRECT TALKS between Israelis and Palestinians appear finally set to begin, after a two-month delay that showed the Obama administration's diplomacy at its worst. The trouble started with an errant announcement by Israel of new housing construction in East Jerusalem; President Obama chose to escalate what could have been a blip into a public quarrel, in the apparent hope of extracting a series of concessions from Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin...

There's an obituary of Rabbi Moshe Hirsch in the New York Times with a pretty good discussion about the Neturei Karta. Jonathan D. Sarna, a professor of American Jewish history at Brandeis, said that what made Rabbi Hirsch so controversial "was not just that he believed -- as did some other rabbis of his day -- that Jews should await the Messiah before establishing a Jewish state, but that he befriended someone like Arafat." Neturei Karta, he said, "represented a small fringe, but were very good at gaining publicity." About Rabbi Hirsch the obituary writes: Moshe Hirsch was born in...

Feminism, Angry Arab News Service, and the vicissitudes of "anti-Zionism"

Posted: 04 May 2010 09:31 AM PDT

Angry Arab News Service recently had a post title which read "Feminism in Israel????" I suppose the point of that is to scoff at the notion that an Apartheid Colonialist Settler Entity such as Israel could ever harbor such a thing as an actual feminist. His latest post on the women's struggle is called "sexism in the Middle East" and it consists of the following three sentences from this source:In Afghanistan, Jordan, Lebanon, Libyan Arab Jamahiriya, Morocco, Oman, Pakistan, Syria and Yemen, women earn 25 cents or less for every dollar men earn. Saudi Arabian and Palestinian women earn only...

The israel prism

Posted: 04 May 2010 04:25 AM PDT

There are those, who, in order to show their sophistication about the Middle East will claim that it is Israel's position that makes peace in the Middle East so elusive. A recent variation on this was the March post in Foreign Affairs alleging that Gen. Petraeus found the failure to move forward on the peace process a major concern of his. This was followed by Max Boot pointing out that the peace process was one of a number of factors mentioned by Petraeus (and not one that he actually presented in his oral testimony to the Senate). Philip Klein of...

49, 67 what's the difference?

Dore Gold on the nature of the 1967 border: In short, the 1967 lines are coming back as a common reference point when many officials and commentators talk about a solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. It is increasingly assumed that there was a recognized international border between the West Bank and Israel in 1967 and what is necessary now is to restore it. Yet this entire discussion is based on a completely distorted understanding of the 1967 line, given the fact that in the West Bank it was not an international border at all. Formally, the 1967 line in the...

The m-w antidote

I haven't yet linked to Martin Peretz's (h/t In Context) or Yaacov Lozowick's comments on John Mearsheimer's recent speech. In particlar I'd like to highlight Yaacov's conclusion: I'm not going to argue with Mearsheimer. The man's lack of access to the subject of internal Israeli politics and how they play out, and his willingness to tell falsehoods about Jews, is beyond embarrassing, though his ability to get away with it speaks volumes to the potency of Jew hatred in our time. The truly significant part of his speech comes about halfway through, when he begins to divide America's Jews into...

Npt pressure on israel

Bret Stephens: There's a reason the NPT has failed the administration. It enshrines a status quo that is 40 years out of date. Today, four of the world's nine nuclear-weapons states are not signatories to the treaty. Of those four, three--India, Israel and Pakistan--are democracies and allies of the U.S. And yet the NPT treats them as pariahs for not subscribing to a treaty that fails to recognize their imperative national security interests, at least as they themselves perceive them. The Canadas of the world may be happy to go along with the NPT, secure as they are under America's...

I'm not sure why this is news: Iran denies that it is building a bomb. But the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the U.N. nuclear watchdog, censured the Islamic republic last year for secretly constructing a nuclear facility and defying U.N. resolutions on uranium enrichment. "We're not going to permit Iran to try to change the story from their failure to comply," Clinton said on NBC's "Meet the Press." Many analysts see the month-long New York meeting as a major test of Obama's nuclear strategy, which seeks to establish U.S. leadership on arms control to press others to live up...

The key to minority report

Posted: 03 May 2010 03:53 AM PDT

Quite a few bloggers have commented on Benjamin Birnbaum's "Minority Report" - an account of Robert Bernstein's break from HRW - in the New Republic. There were some ironies. According to Birnbaum, Marc Garlasco was one of the HRW staffers who was more sympathetic to Israel. After his dishonest performance four years ago, I'm not sure how much credit I'd give him on that score. Unless, of course, that demonstrates how bad the anti-Israel animus really is there. The other character who comes off as less anti-Israel than one might have guessed is Richard Goldstone. The stories really seem to...

The sulzberger approach

Posted: 02 May 2010 10:54 AM PDT

Last week John Mearsheimer of Walt and Mearsheimer infamy, gave a speech. Elder of Ziyon clinically identifies Mearsheimer's straw men and knocks them down. Noah Pollak asks: I believe Mearsheimer left out a category: "Anti-Semites and Jew-Baiters." I will leave it to you who to add to that list. David Bernstein notes that Mearsheimer claims to want a two state solution but ... Fair enough. But Mearsheimer fails to mention the recent public opinion poll that shows that Palestinians overwhelmingly reject this solution [Do you accept the creation of a Palestinian state within the 1967 borders with some land exchange...

Arabs allow indirect talks

Posted: 02 May 2010 04:06 AM PDT

In Arabs Back Indirect Talks Between Palestinians - NYTimes.com, Michael Slackman reports: Arab ministers gathered late Saturday at the offices of the Arab League here at the request of the Palestinian leadership, which sought regional support before agreeing, again, to enter into indirect talks. But while the Palestinians and the Arab ministers agreed to endorse jump-starting peace talks that have been stalled for more than a year, they did not give ground on the issue of settlements. We keep hearing how important the issue of Palestine is to the Arab world. The collection of unelected kings and despots who rule...
